"Unlocking the Potential: The Role of Emotional Intelligence and Resilience in Developing Young Soccer Players"
The importance of talent identification and development in sports organizations cannot be overstated. In soccer, where top athletes can earn tens of millions per year, the search for the next potential superstar is ongoing. However, despite the popularity of talent identification and development programs, there is no universally accepted theoretical framework to guide current practice. In this blog, we will explore two key performance features of adolescent footballers aiming to achieve elite success, as identified by recent research.
One key component of successful development and progression to world-class success is the development of mental skills. Recent research has suggested that emotional intelligence (EI) could be a key factor in athletes reaching their full potential. In fact, 90% of top performers in fields such as business and sport have been found to possess high levels of EI. Awareness (e.g., self-awareness, awareness of others) and resilience were two of six key factors perceived by academy coaches at elite clubs in England to positively influence player development, according to a study conducted by Mills et al in 2012. This investigation came to the conclusion that of these indicators, awareness emerged as the most fundamental and mediating element for understanding how young players transition to the professional level. The ability to deal with setbacks, be it emotional, physical or psychological, can be regarded as 'resilience'. Resilience is a key factor of success for athletes, particularly around the age when teammates may be signing professional deals or making short-term 'progress'. Due to the fact that resilience, like awareness, is a key aspect of EI, we can assume that EI as a framework can be a good indicator of success, as it includes multiple important psychological and emotional behaviors associated with success.
Another important aspect of talent development is the psychological skills that underpin effective development. These psychological characteristics of developing excellence (PCDEs) can encompass both trait characteristics and state-deployed skills. Developing characteristics such as belief, commitment, and awareness allows athletes to stay committed and engaged in the development process, even when peers are engaging in more 'enjoyable' activities. Young athletes must also be able to cope with the psychological stress that can arise at critical stages of their career, particularly when peers may be experiencing short-term success, and when social distractions like parties and alcohol are introduced. The ability to remain focused and committed in the face of such distractions can be the difference between success and failure.
In conclusion, talent identification and development is critical for any sports organization looking to nurture high-performing athletes. Emotional intelligence, particularly awareness and resilience, and the psychological characteristics of developing excellence, such as belief, commitment, and awareness, are key components of effective development. By focusing on these critical performance features, sports organizations can better identify and develop the next generation of superstars, ensuring long-term success on and off the field.
